NEWARK, Del. – No. rv Delaware had multiple scoring opportunities Saturday evening, but in the end Hofstra came out on top, 2-1, at a rainy Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
In a dual between the top two teams in the CAA and a rematch of last season's title game, Luke Brown put the first goal on board for the Pride (6-3-1, 4-0-0 CAA) in the 18th minute, becoming the first opponent to score on the Blue Hens in the first half of a game this season.
UD freshman Fede Prieto (Las Rozas de Madrid, Spain/IES Carmen Conde/Mostoles CF) knotted things up at 1-1 just before halftime. Senior All-American Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) assisted on the play as Prieto put it in from about 10 yards out on the left side in the 34th minute.
With tensions running high in the second half, Danny Elliott registered the eventual game-winning goal in the 58th minute.
The Blue Hens (8-3-0, 3-1-0 CAA) outshot the Pride in the final 20-plus minutes of the game by a tally of 5-0, including two on goal and three that were just barely outside of the net.
Redshirt sophomore Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) collected two saves in the loss.
Alex Ashton, who received just his third start of the season, was credited with the win while recording four saves.
“Tonight's game was a lesson for us. Despite all the possessions that you have, all the extra shots on goal, it all comes down to moments. We had a couple of critical moments in the second half that we didn't deal with well and one ended up being a goal. Hofstra is well coached, well organized and has good leadership on the field. And those are the types of teams that we will get punished by, and we did tonight.”
