Jones Leads Delaware Women's Cross Country at Penn State National Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- University of Delaware freshman Mackenzie Jones led the way for the Blue Hens Friday morning at the Penn State National Open.
Jones, a freshman from Danville, Pa. (Danville High School), led the Blue Hens for the fourth time this season as she covered the six-kilometer course in a time of 21:50, placing 88th overall and finishing ahead of Delaware's contingent of 12 runners.
Earlier this season she led the Blue Hens at the Lehigh Invitational (third place), Delaware Invitational (fourth), and Paul Short Invitational (28th). She did not compete at Delaware's Blue & Gold Invitational last Saturday.
Delaware posted a team score of 507 points to place tied for 17th in the 19-team field that consisted of some of the nation's top-ranked teams. Host and No. 8 ranked Penn State won the team title with 47 total points as the Nittany Lions took the first three spots led by meet champion Tessa Barrett (20:11).
No. 25 Mississippi placed second with 94 points followed by No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 30 West Virginia, Texas, Cornell, Wyoming, William & Mary, Bucknell, and Pittsburgh in the top 10.
Delaware will take next week off in preparation for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships to be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Delaware's own White Clay Creek State Park Course.
