ELON, N.C. – Delaware registered its 10th win of the season Saturday evening as the Blue Hens came from behind to defeat Elon, 3-2, at Rudd Field.
Senior Guillermo Delgado (below left; Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) continues to re-write the program record books as he finished the game with a goal and assist and is now Delaware's
all-time assists record holder with 19 career helpers. He also inched closer to Mike Biggs' program record 47 career goals and now sits with 46 for his four-year career in a Blue Hens uniform.
Classmate Marco Siverio (El Rosario, Spain/Colegio Hispano Británico) added a career-best three points on a goal and assist of his own.
Elijah Agu tallied Elon's first goal of the game in just the second minute of action before Delaware senior Thomas de Villardi (Vincennes, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guingamp) responded with a goal of his own just three minutes later.
The early game scoring continued in the 10th minute as Agu put the Phoenix (7-3-3, 3-1-2 CAA) ahead, 2-1.
Delgado finished his shot from inside the box in the 67th minute to tie the game at 2-2 for his ninth goal of the year.
Siverio collected the cross from the right side from fellow senior Jaime Martinez (Madrid, Spain/American School of Madrid) in the 75th minute for the game-winner as the Hens improve to 10-5-1 on the year and 5-2 in CAA action.
Redshirt sophomore Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) split time between the pipes with senior Paul DeFeo (Kinnelton, N.J./Kinnelton), who made his first appearance for the Blue Hens this season. Morton allowed two goals with a save while DeFeo held Elon scoreless while posting a save.
Matthew Jegier collected two saves with three goals allowed in 90 minutes of play for the Phoenix.
“This was an important conference win for us tonight. The atmosphere and crowd were great and Elon asked a lot of us over the course of the game. I'm very pleased with our second half performance and I believe it sets us up nicely for our road game Wednesday against the undefeated and top-ranked Maryland Terps.
