Blue Hens Set Two-Round Record in Third Place Finish at Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational

APALACHIN, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware men's golf team posted a 282 team score on Monday as the Blue Hens finished in third place out of 16 squads at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational hosted by Binghamton.
St. Bonaventure and Drexel tied for first place with 565 scores, with the Bonnies winning the tiebreaker to capture the team title. Delaware, which fired a 284 on Sunday, finished one shot back at 566, the lowest two-round total in school history. The Blue Hens finished three strokes better than the previous mark of 569 set at the Navy Fall Classic in September, 2010.
UD junior Kieran Purcell carded a one under par 71 on Monday on the par 72, 7,014-yard Links at Hiawatha Landing course, finishing in a tie for sixth place with a five under par 68-71-139.
Jack Gianniny also fired a 71 during his second round, as he tied for ninth place with a three under par 70-71-141. Fellow junior Blaine Lafferty shot a two under par 70 to tie for 16th place at 72-70-142, two under par.
Senior Marc Oliveri equaled Lafferty for the lowest round of the day by a Blue Hen as he also carded a 70, finishing tied for 35th place with a two over par 76-70-146. Sophomore Mark Benevento, who fired an even par 72 on Monday, also tied for 35th with a 74-72-146.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Bobby Diforio tied for 38th place with a three over par 75-72-147.
Owen Quinn of Lehigh earned medalist honors with a nine under par 69-66-135.
Delaware returns to action on Oct. 17-17 when the Blue Hens compete in the Elon Phoenix Invitational at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C.
