ELON, N.C. -- Alexa Swann and Maria Bellinger each blasted 16 kills as the University of Delaware volleyball team continued to roll with a four-set victory over Elon Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gym.
The Blue Hens, who have won five of their last six matches including three straight on the road, captured the contest by set scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21. Delaware, which improved to 11-14 overall and 5-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association, moved into sixth place in the league standings with today's win and UNCW's loss at Northeastern.
Elon, which lost for the eighth time in nine matches, dropped to 16-12 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
Swann set a season-high with her 16 kills on the day, while she committed just one attack error on 25 swings to hit .600 during the win. Bellinger's 16 kills were her second highest total of the year as she hit .325, while Autumn Jenkins was the third Blue Hen in double figure kills with 12 of her own.
Jenkins also led the defensive effort with 18 digs, while Erin Layne also notched a double-double with 50 assists and 14 digs. Taylor Hollingsworth posted 14 digs of her own, while Kori Rasmussen chipped in with 10 digs.
Kam Terry led the Phoenix with 12 kills, while Sydel Curry handed out 44 assists and Maddie Jaudon recorded 16 digs.
The opening set was knotted 10-10 before the Blue Hens took six consecutive points and led the rest of the way, putting the game away on a Bellinger kill. Delaware then held a slim 18-17 advantage in the second stanza, but the Phoenix responded by winning seven of the next nine points to go in front 24-20. UD countered with a three-point run to pull within one, but Elon's Sydney Busa posted a kill to even the match at a set apiece.
However Delaware would answer by dominating the third game, racing out to a 14-5 margin and leading by at least six points the rest of the set. After the fourth frame was deadlocked at 13-13, but Blue Hens captured five of the next six points and led from there, before eventually putting the match away on a Bellinger kill.
“I'm really happy that we went 2-0 on the road this week,” Swann said. “That's something we don't take for granted. As far as today's match, I'm really proud of the way we set the tone and maintained it for the entire match. Everyone on the team did a great job doing what they needed to do to help this team win. When that happens, we flow well as a team and I think it's something that is really fun to be a part of and watch.”
Delaware closes out its home schedule next weekend when the Blue Hens host Northeastern on Friday at 7 p.m. and Hofstra on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Match Notes:
• Jenkins recorded her team-leading 14th double-double of the season, including her third straight
• Swann has posted 34 kills against just three attack errors over the last three matches
• Layne's 50 assists are one shy of her career-high
• UD has won five of six matches for the first time since a 6-1 stretch from Sept. 11-19, 2015
