ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Blue Hens concluded fall tournament play in successful fashion by garnering 26 total wins throughout the weekend at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational, held at the Brigade Sports Complex.
Graduate student Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) led the way for the Blue Hens by clinching the Flight B Singles title. LaMachia fought through tough wins over Emily Louie-Meadors (Navy), 6-2, 2-6, 10-7, and Tatiana Eftenoiu (Fairleigh Dickinson), 4-6, 6-2 (10) in the first two rounds.
In semifinals action, LaMachia defeated Rutgers' Mingxiu Du, 6-1, 7-5 before collecting the finals victory against Buffalo's Mercedes Losada, 6-4, 6-3.
Also in singles action, freshman Brooke Pilkington (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) became the first Blue Hen to reach the 10-win mark on the year while notching the Flight A consolation crown. After falling in her first match, Pilkington rallied for victories over George Washington, Rutgers and Navy.
Juniors Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and Arielle Shuren (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and sophomore Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) also garnered consolation championships in their respective flights.
Studnicki defeated players from Howard, Rutgers and Seton Hall to claim the Flight C consolation while Shuren picked up two wins over Howard in Flight E. Hall settled the Flight D consolation with victories versus George Mason, Buffalo and Navy.
On the doubles side, Komer and Pilkington paired for the Flight A title with four straight wins over George Washington, Buffalo (twice) and Rutgers.
“Winning is fun while learning is rewarding. We learned a lot and also had fun this fall. This tournament was a stellar way for us to close out the fall competitive season. I'm very proud of each of our players for the way they played this weekend. Each one took uncharacteristic yet calculated risks in her own unique way. No matter the outcome, the Intel that we uncovered as a result of their courage to compete outside their comfort zones is profound.”
