Delaware Shuts Down Iona in Second Half, Stays Unbeaten at Home With 63-54 Victory

NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen freshman guard Ryan Daly posted his first career double-double while and the UD defense shut down Iona in the second half as the University of Delaware men's basketball team remained unbeaten at home with a 63-54 win over the Gaels Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware, which won its fifth consecutive home game, improved to 7-6 as the Blue Hens concluded the non-conference portion of their schedule with a winning record. Iona dropped its second straight game while falling to 8-5 on the year.
Daly finished with game-highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds in 36 minutes of action during his first career start, while four Blue Hens reached double figures on the night.
Anthony Mosley (left, photo by Chris Mlynarczyk) contributed 14 points, Cazmon Hayes added 12, and Darian Bryant (below, photo by Jeff Fannon) chipped in with 11 points and four assists. Delaware handed out 14 assists on its 21 baskets during the win, and also held a 40-34 rebounding advantage.
Jordan Washington led Iona with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Jon Severe was the only other Gaels player to reach double figures with 12 points.
Delaware hit five straight shots while jumping out to a 14-6 lead six minutes into the game, but Iona answered with a 7-0 run to pull within a point less than a minute later.
The Gaels twice took a one-point advantage in the opening half, but the Blue Hens scored five straight points and carried a 31-28 lead into the break after Mosley found Bryant for a layup in the final minute.
The Blue Hens still led by just three at 38-35 with 14:49 remaining in the game, but then held Iona to just one field goal over the next 11 and a half minutes, exploding for a decisive 15-3 run to pull away.
Daly ignited the spurt with five straight points, while a Mosley layup put the Blue Hens up double figures at 45-35 with 10:19 to play.
It was still a 10-point game five minutes later, before Daly converted a layup and Hayes buried a three-pointer to put the Blue Hens up 53-38 with 3:25 on the clock.
Severe finally ended the Gaels' drought with a triple but Daly, who scored all but three of his points in the second half, immediately answered with a three-pointer of his own and the Blue Hens led comfortably the rest of the way.
Delaware remains home on Saturday as the Blue Hens open Colonial Athletic Association play against Hofstra with a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Carpenter Center.

• Delaware has opened 5-0 at home for first time since the 1999-2000 squad won its first nine home games
• The Blue Hens won for the first time in six meetings with Iona
• Chivarsky Corbett missed the game with a right leg injury but is expected to play vs. Hofstra
• Daly's 12 rebounds were a career-high and he scored in double figures for the fifth straight game
• Barnett Harris made his second start of the year and played a season-high 19 minutes
• Washington reached double digits for the eighth consecutive game for Iona
• Delaware has equaled its win total from last season
