NEWARK, Del. – Delaware outscored Charleston by 16 points in the second half en route to a 72-55 victory over the Cougars at the Bob Carpenter Center Friday evening.
The Hens, who led by just one at halftime, opened the third period on an 11-0 run before finishing the stanza with a 51-43 lead. Delaware (12-11, 7-5 CAA) pulled ahead by even more in the fourth by holding an eight-point advantage over the Cougs (9-13, 4-7 CAA) and sealing the victory at 72-55.
Senior Courtni Green (at left; Winchester, Va./Millbrook) led UD for the third straight game with 16 points and four rebounds.
Freshman Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) added 14 points and eight rebounds while junior Erika Brown (below right; Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) posted 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Junior Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) registered 10 points and six rebounds with two steals.
Bre Bolden, who reached the 1,000-career point mark during the game, finished the night with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
“All of the things we talk about not doing, we were doing in the first half. We didn't share the ball. We took off-balance and ill-advised shots. We weren't defending well. We kept leaving our feet and going for ball fakes. Defensively, we did a much better job of rotating and hedging in the second half. We played good, solid team defense, which led to fast breaks. Defense and rebounding wins games and that's how we needed to play.”
Junior Erika Brown
“We didn't play our type of defense in the first half. We focused on Delaware defense coming out of halftime and that's what helped us get on a run in the third quarter. It all started with the defense because we were then able to get easy transition buckets. Our defense really brings the energy to the offensive end and gets our offense going.”
Freshman Nicole Enabosi
“In the first half, we were doing the small things that kept us from getting wins in the beginning of the season. Things turned around when we started playing better defense and shared the ball in the second half.”
