NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware could not sustain its big first half comeback and dropped a 77-66 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball decision to Hofstra Saturday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (6-19, 1-13 CAA), coming off their first conference win of the season Thursday night against Drexel, fell behind by 14 points just five minutes into the game vs. Hofstra but fought back to
take a slim halftime advantage and still held a share of the lead with 2:46 left before the Pride pulled away.
Delaware sophomore guard Anthony Mosley forged the fifth tie of the second half with two free throws with 2:46 remaining, but Hofstra reeled off 12 straight points, including seven free throws in the final minute, to escape with the victory and sweep the season series.
Blue Hen sophomore guard Kory Holden led all scorers with 23 points and dished out seven assists, senior forward Marvin King-Davis (left) added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Mosley finished with 11 points and seven rebounds but the Hens fell to Hofstra for the fourth straight time, including a 90-80 loss back on Dec. 31.
“The final score is not indicative of how close the game was,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “I thought our guys played hard and played well, and we had it tied with less than three minutes left, but unfortunately we missed a layup and they got a run-out. We had some positives today, but weren't able to finish tonight like we did on Thursday."
Hofstra (18-8, 10-4 CAA), the CAA preseason favorite, placed four scorers in double figures as guard Juan'ya Green had 19 points and 12 assists, center Rokas Gustys scored 18 and pulled down a game-high 21 rebounds, Ameen Tanksley contributed 15 points, and Denton Koon chipped in with 13 points.
Gustys, who entered the game ranked No. 7 in the NCAA with 11.9 rebounds per game, recorded his 15th double-double of the season while Tanksley reached double figures in points for the 14th straight game and Green earned his fifth double-double.
The Hens led by as much as eight points in the second half as center Maurice Jeffers capped a 9-3 run with a dunk off a fast break with 9:06 left, giving Delaware a 54-46 advantage. But the Pride outscored Delaware 12-2 over the next three minutes to take a 58-56 lead with 5:48 left.
The game featured three more ties, the last at 65-65 on Mosley's two free throws with 2:46 remaining. Hofstra then followed with its decisive 12-point scoring burst that included five points each from Green and Koon to put the game away.
The game appeared to be a blowout early as Hofstra hit seven straight shots, including three three-pointers, over the opening 5:24 to take a 20-6 lead. But the Hens refused to give in, using a 20-5 run of its own to take a 26-25 lead with 4:04 left in the opening half.
The run was highlighted by 10 points from Holden and eight from King-Davis. Delaware eventually took a 26-25 lead into halftime.
