PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel used a 12-point run midway through the second half to take control as the Dragons posted a 74-64 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over Delaware Thursday night at the Daskalakis Center.
Marvin King-Davis scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Blue Hens, who dropped to 7-21 overall and 2-15 in the conference. Kory Holden (left) added 18 points and
seven assists on the night, while Cazmon Hayes (below) chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.
Delaware, which dropped its 12th consecutive road game, will be the 10th seed in next weekend's CAA Tournament in Baltimore.
Drexel, which won its second straight contest, improved to 5-23 overall and 3-14 in league play.
Terrell Allen led four Dragons in double figures with 19 points as he hit all 10 of his free throw attempts, while Tavon Allen added 18 points and Kazembe Abif notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Drexel went 14 of 21 (66.7%) from the field during the second half and knocked down 15 of 21 free throws in the final stanza as the Dragons pulled away for the victory.
Delaware led by two points at the half and was still up a point at 41-40 following two King-Davis free throws with 11:12 to play, but Drexel exploded for 12 straight points to take a 52-41 lead and force a UD timeout with 7:23 to play.
King-Davis scored inside to end an 0 of 11 drought from the field for the Blue Hens, while Anthony Mosley banked in a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 54-46 a minute later.
However the Dragons countered with four straight points and led by at least eight the rest of the way.
“Congratulations to Drexel, they stepped up and played well in the second half, and had us on our heels defensively,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We missed too many layups in the second half; you have to finish inside and we weren't able to do that tonight. I thought we had good recognition on shooters in the first half, but we didn't guard nearly as well as we needed to in the second half.”
Delaware jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, but Drexel answered with six straight points and went ahead 17-13 on a three-pointer by Tavon Allen at the 7:17 mark.
The Blue Hens battled back and used an 8-1 run to go in front by six, and eventually took a 29-27 halftime lead over the Dragons.
Delaware scored the first two baskets of the second period, but Drexel used an 8-0 run to go back in front and the game remained tight until the Dragons' decisive run.
The Blue Hens close the regular season on Saturday by hosting Elon at 2 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
