MIAMI, Fla. -- Delaware received strong complete game efforts from pitchers Kiersten Coffman and Carolyn Szymanski as the Blue Hens defeated Central Connecticut, 5-2 and 3-0, on Sunday to close out play at the FIU Felsberg Invitational.
Coffman allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out eight in the opener, as she improved to 5-2 on the season. Szymanski then fired a four-hit shutout in the nightcap to post her third win of the year, as Delaware (8-4) won its fifth consecutive game.
During the first game of the day, the Blue Hens took control by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Gabby Klecko singled home Morgan Schroll with the first tally of the contest, and after Giovanna Kolofer drove home another on an RBI groundout, Klecko crossed the plate when Leanna Gearhart reached on an error.
The Blue Devils (1-6) scored an unearned run in the top of the third, but Delaware got the run right back in the bottom half when Lisa Stacevicz doubled home Madison Vicendese. An inning later Anna Steinmetz delivered an RBI single to chase home Gearhart, before Central Connecticut's Eileen Purcell belted a solo homer in the fifth to conclude the scoring.
The Blue Hens jumped in front during the teams' second game of the afternoon, as Kolofer laced a bases loaded single to plate Cailey Isaacs and Alyshia Dellatore in the top of the second. Kolofer then reached on an error in the fourth before eventually scoring on a double steal attempt for Delaware's final run of the day.
The Blue Devils loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Szymanski struck out Mackenzie Keyes and got Brittany Camara to bounce into a fielder's choice to hold on for the victory.
Delaware will host the Blue Hen Blast Tournament next weekend at the UD Softball Stadium, beginning with games against Delaware State at 12:30 p.m. and Norfolk State at 3 p.m. on Friday.
Game Notes:
• Delaware has won five straight games for the first time since a seven-game streak from Mar. 30-Apr. 5, 2014
• Szymanski is now tied for 10th place in UD history with both 32 career wins and eight shutouts
• With her fifth victory of the season, Coffman surpassed her win total from 2014 and 2015
