NEWARK, Del. – Crucial mistakes down the stretch hindered the Blue Hens as Delaware fell to Elon, 66-64, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Phoenix (14-8, 7-4 CAA) twice extended the contest with 3-pointers in the final six seconds before Shay Burnett inbounded the ball off a Delaware player and put in the layup from the left side to give Elon the two-point advantage as time expired in the second overtime period.
Senior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) guided the Blue Hens (11-11, 6-5 CAA) with season-bests of 24 points and eight rebounds in 47 minutes of action. The guard was automatic from the charity stripe and knocked down critical free throws in the each of the final three periods played.
Freshman Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) contributed nine points and four rebounds while classmate Hannah Friend (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) tallied eight points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Sophomore Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) led Delaware for the seventh straight game with 11 rebounds.
Burnett posted 18 points, 11 rebounds and three assists for the Phoenix while Jenifer Rhodes collected 10 points and 12 rebounds.
“We did some really silly things today. You have to give Elon credit as both teams fought extremely hard, but some of our mental mistakes at the end are ones that we practice every single day. If we had boxed out like we should have on some of their 3-pointers, the game would have been over in regulation. But we gave them a good look and in the end Elon did what they needed to do. It's frustrating, but I will not quit and this team will not quit.”
Senior Courtni Green
“There are a lot of little things defensively that we didn't do. We just didn't play smart basketball at the end. Overall, we played a great, tough game, but I just think we made simple mistakes. We will learn from this.”
