Bob Shillinglaw his 300th victory UD. With the win Saturday, Shillinglaw's 301 victories at Delaware are more than any coach at a single school in NCAA Division I history.Few of those victories were more thrilling than this one. Senior co-captain Steve DeLargy scored twice in the final 8:07, including the goal with 15 seconds left in regulation that sent the game into overtime. After Tyler Mardian won the faceoff, the Hens held the ball until Romagnoli's game-winner 39 seconds in won it and set off a wild celebration.
“I am so proud of this group,” said Shillinglaw, who passed former UMass head coach Dick Garber for most wins by a coach at an NCAA I school. “They just kept fighting and grinding the whole game. The defense did a great job in the fourth quarter shutting Binghamton out and we made plays which created goals. I am very excited for the team.”
DeLargy finished with three goals on the day while Paul Major scored twice and Jake Levine added a goal and as assist. Romagnoli also added an assist and Hen goalkeeper Parker Ferrigan (six saves) made the rarest of lacrosse plays when he scored a goal from 60 yards out midway through the second period. Sam Walsh came up big on faceoffs once again for the Hens, winning 11 of 18 tries.
Binghamton (0-4), which was playing its home opener, got four goals and two assists from Johnny Maher and two goals each from Ben Kocis and Joe Licata.
This game was yet another thriller in a series that has seen its share of close ones. Delaware downed Binghamton for the second straight time in New York after a 10-9 win in 2014 when Brian Kormandy scored as time expired.
After Romagnoli scored the game's first goal just 3:36 in, Binghamton answered with four straight goals to go up 4-1. But Delaware had an answer as the Blue Hens scored three straight goals, including Ferrigan's unlikely score, to tie things at 4-4.
That would be Delaware's last share of the lead until the final seconds of regulation. Binghamton reeled off four straight goals to take an 8-4 advantage into halftime and scored twice in the final 2:32 of the third quarter to go up 11-7.
The fourth quarter was all Delaware despite the Bearcats outshooting the Hens 10-9 during the stanza. Delaware made the most of its chances as Romagnoli and Major scored eight seconds apart early in the stanza to cut the deficit to 11-9 and DeLargy delivered with his two goals to send the game into extra time.
