Jim Sherman after the game. “It was just one of those games where it didn't matter who we pitched, they were going to hit the ball. This was the first game all year where our pitchers really got knocked around. Today we stand 12 and 5. Not bad. We will definitely bounce back from this one.”Delaware will look to start another streak Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. when the Blue Hens host Fairfield for three games during the weekend.
Sophomore left-hander Matt Hornich started the game for the Blue Hens and took the loss after being knocked out with two outs in the third inning. Bryant quickly got on the board to start the game, scoring two runs in the top of the first and tacking on another in the third.
Delaware got right back in the game in the third starting with an RBI double to right-center field off the bat of Nick Patten to score Doug Trimble. The next UD batter, sophomore designated hitter Calvin Scott, smashed a home run over the left field fence to score Patten and tie the game at 3-3. The home run was his second of the year in just 19 at bats.
From there it was all Bryant. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the third, two in the fourth, and four more in the fifth and never looked back. Bryant did not come up empty in any inning until the final frame when Delaware freshman Dan Belfer pitched a scoreless ninth in his collegiate debut.
The Blue Hens would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Tyler Dean and Adam Rapp, however, the deficit was too large for the Delaware bats to overcome this time.
First baseman Robby Rinn and leftfielder AJ Zarozny each hit home runs for Bryant and Rinn added a triple and finished with four RBI. Zarozny and Buck McCarthy each added three RBI to aid the Bulldog attack.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware lost for the first time since a 5-3 setback at home to UMass Lowell on March 6
• A scary moment occurred in the seventh inning when Delaware leftfielder Jordan Glover and shortstop James Meeker collided on a liner to leftfield. Both players were attended to by trainers for several minutes but walked off on their own power. They did not return to the game and their status for this weekend will be determined later.
• Bryant, which owns wins over then No. 22 Kentucky, Maryland, Penn State, and San Diego State this season, set a school record with a 5-0 start this year
• Trimble upped his hitting streak to seven games while Patten extended his on-base streak to 13 games.
• Delaware third baseman Diaz Nardo, a freshman All-American in 2015, returned to action after missing the last six games due to a hand injury and had one hit in four at bats.
