MERION STATION, Pa. -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Saint Joseph's, 5-3, and 7-2, Saturday afternoon at the SJU Softball Field.
Delaware (13-9) struck first in the opener, as Alyshia Dellatore led off the top of the second with an infield single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Shelby Jones. Leanna Gearhart then singled to center to drive home Gabby Klecko, but Saint Joseph's (9-8) quickly answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Stacey Mayer ignited the rally with a leadoff homer, and after a walk and two singles loaded the bases, Amanda Kulp worked a walk to force home the tying run. Taryn Grober and Sarah Yoos added run-scoring sacrifice flies later in the inning, while a solo homer by Cyndi Wilson in the bottom of third put the Hawks on top, 5-2.
Anna Steinmetz (left) drilled a home run in the fifth, her team-leading fifth of the season, but Delaware would not get closer.
Blue Hen starter Kiersten Coffman dropped to 8-4 after allowing four runs on five hits in two innings of work, while Gearhart and Klecko each had two hits during the contest.
The Hawks then immediately took control of the nightcap by pushing across five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kulp scored the first run on a wild pitch, while Yoos added a two-run double and Mayer drove home another run with a double during the rally.
Delaware got on the board in the top of the third when Klecko led off with an infield single, moved to second on a Jones single, and scored on a single to center by Dellatore. However a sacrifice fly by Kaylyn Zierke in the bottom of the fourth extended the Saint Joseph's advantage back to five.
Gearhart led off the top of the sixth with a homer to rightfield, her first of the year, but Madeline Brunck added a longball of her own in the bottom half to close the scoring.
Carolyn Szymanski took the loss for the Blue Hens and fell to 5-4 on the year after allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits in 1.1 innings of work.
