Blue Hen Rowers Win Four Races vs. Temple, Lehigh, SJU To Open 2016 Season

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women's rowing team had three boats that won races during the morning session and one in the afternoon session as the Blue Hens opened their 2016 season Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

The UD Second Varsity Eight boat captured its race in 6:51.26, finishing eight seconds ahead of Temple and 17 seconds faster than Lehigh. The Second Varsity Four won its event with a time of 7:45.94, ahead of Temple at 8:02.74. The Blue Hen Novice Eight was the third boat to win during the morning, finishing its race in 7:10.49. Temple placed second in 7:15.78, while the UD Third Varsity Eight came in third at 7:35.77.

Delaware finished second in the Varsity Four race in 7:56.88, while Temple took the event with a time of 7:39.85. The Owls also won the Varsity Eight race in 6:36.10, followed by Lehigh at 6:44.71 and Delaware at 6:49.39.

The Blue Hens then competed against Saint Joseph's during the afternoon, highlighted by the Second Varsity Eight boat winning its race by six seconds with a time of 6:52.9. The Hawks took the Varsity Eight race in 6:50.49, while UD finished in 7:00.7.

Saint Joseph's won the Varsity Four race in 7:45.1, while the Blue Hen “A” boat was second in 7:47.54 and the “B” boat came in fourth in 7:52.71. The Hawks also captured the Novice Eight race in 7:17.28, followed by the Blue Hen Third Varsity Eight crew in 7:29.75 and the Novice Eight boat in 7:31.46.

Delaware returns to action next Saturday when the Blue Hens compete in the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River.
