NEWARK, Del. – The Blue Hens closed regular season play Wednesday evening in disappointing fashion as Delaware fell to James Madison, 65-43, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
With the loss, Delaware falls to 15-14 overall and 10-8 in CAA action. The Hens have earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament and will face No. 4 Elon in the CAA Quarterfinals on Thursday, March 10. James Madison clinched the top seed with a record of 16-1 in CAA games. The Dukes will conclude their season Saturday at Charleston.
JMU jumped out to an early 21-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as the Hens were unable to hold their own on the boards. The Dukes ended the game with a 60-33 rebounding advantage.
Senior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) guided Delaware with 10 points and four rebounds while redshirt sophomore Sadé Chatman (at left; St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) collected nine points and four rebounds.
Sophomore Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) grabbed seven rebounds in addition to four points, one block, one steal and one assist.
James Madison had three players finish in double figures and was led by Destiny Jones' 11 points. Kayla Cooper-Williams added a double double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
“JMU played very well tonight. They are ready for postseason play and they are the top team in the league with five seniors. We did not rebound well enough tonight and we struggled to hang with JMU physically. Their senior leadership, strength and size definitely overwhelmed us, and our kids have to step up to that challenge. We did not play well tonight. There is simply no excuse.”
Senior Alecia Bell
“We make goals before every game and we expected to do much better. We didn't meet our goals and that's something we really have to work on going into next week's tournament. We definitely have to work on our rebounding. The aggressiveness factor was lacking tonight.”
