NEWARK, Del. – Completing their third match in as many days, Delaware fell to Mount St. Mary's, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts.
The Blue Hens (1-12) fought until the end in each of the three doubles matches, but in the end, the Mountaineers (10-8) swept the competition by scores of 6-3, 7-6 (2) and 7-6 (4).
Delaware freshman Venkatesh Ramkumar (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) opened singles action by knocking off Louis Tonon, 6-1, 6-2, in the third flight for his second straight win of the week.
Classmate Blaise Casselbury (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) followed with the second consecutive victory of his own with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Darren Mast in the fourth slot.
The Hens continued their success in the fifth flight as sophomore Colin Wong (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia/SMK Kota Kemuning) defeated Brandon Wortkotter, 6-4, 7-5, for his team-leading seventh win of the year.
“This is was a tough one anyway you slice it. Losing the two doubles matches in tiebreakers set the tone in singles play as well. We lost more no-ad points than we won and that is often the difference in a close 4-3 match.”
