NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team posted a 4-2 victory over Hofstra in the opener before the Pride recorded a 6-5 triumph in the nightcap as the teams split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens (25-14, 7-4 CAA) took the early lead in the opener during the bottom of the first inning when Leanna Gearhart led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single up the middle by Gabby Klecko. However Hofstra (21-16, 5-5 CAA) quickly pulled even in the top of the second on a solo home run to left by Brielle Pietrafesa.
Gearhart then singled home Mattie Nuccio in the bottom of the second, before she came around to score when Klecko reached on a Hofstra error to put Delaware in front 3-1.
The Pride got a run back in the top of third without the benefit of a hit when Kim Smith worked a bases loaded walk, but the Blue Hens tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Alyshia Dellatore laced a one-out double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nuccio, and scored on a wild pitch.
Madison Ambush led off the top of the seventh with a single for Hofstra, but Kiersten Coffman replaced Carolyn Szymanski (above) in the circle and retired the next three batters to seal the victory for the Blue Hens. Szymanski improved to 10-7 after allowing two runs on four hits in six innings of work, before Coffman earned her third save of the year.
The win snapped Delaware's 27-game losing skid to Hofstra, as the Blue Hens posted their first win over the Pride since 2006.
After an RBI single by Smith in the top of the first gave Hofstra the early lead in the nightcap, Delaware quickly answered with a three-spot in the bottom half. Gearhart opened the frame with a walk, and after she stole second, she scored when Klecko reached on an error. Mariah Kondravy then blasted a double to center to chase home Klecko, before she scored on a pair of groundouts to make it a 3-1 game.
UD added a run in the second when Nuccio singled with two outs, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error by Hofstra catcher Brittany Allocca. However Allocca atoned for her error with a two-run homer in the top of the third, before the Pride added a pair of longballs in the top of the sixth to take the lead.
Megan Patierno blasted a two-run shot to left to put Hofstra in front, while Lacey Clark added a solo shot later in the frame to put the Pride in front 6-4.
Delaware rallied in the bottom of the seventh, as Klecko led off with a triple and scored when Kondravy followed with a sacrifice fly. One out later Lisa Stacevicz and Dellatore singled, but pinch runner Morgan Schroll was barely thrown out at third on a groundball hit in the hole by Shelby Jones to end the game.
The teams conclude their weekend series on Sunday with a single game beginning at 12 noon.
