NEWARK, Del. – The Blue Hens closed out regular season play Saturday afternoon by falling to Villanova, 5-2, at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts.
The Wildcats (10-8) opened the afternoon with back-to-back 6-2 wins in both the first and third doubles flights.
Delaware sophomore Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) halted a five-game losing streak and tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Tori Smyth in top-flight singles play.
Villanova followed with wins in the third and second spots before Hens freshman Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) came from behind to defeat Samantha Schafer, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1, in the fourth flight to bring UD within 3-2.
The Wildcats finished the afternoon with victories in the fifth and sixth flights.
The loss marked the sixth consecutive for the Blue Hens, who move to 8-9 on the year.
“We have so much talent to work with, but we're just not progressing at the rate that we really want to which is challenging. This was a tough loss, but Villanova played very well and deserved to come out on top. We have to stay persistent and realize that each of these young players is proving themselves in every match that they play.”
