4/17/2016 4:34:00 PM | Women's Golf
The Blue Hens, in just the fifth year of the program, carded the lowest team round on Sunday with a 306, finishing first out of the eight league teams with a 927 total.
Patty Post. “The seniors played really solid golf, and made some crucial birdies down the stretch. We made it tough on ourselves after Friday's round, but hung in there and I'm very proud of the entire team.”Meanwhile Slane (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak), who won last year's conference championship by eight strokes, became the first women's golfer in CAA history to earn back-to-back titles by recording a two over par 77-71-70-218 on the par 72, 6,066-yard Reserve Club course.
She is just the second CAA women's golfer to win multiple conference titles, along with Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen in 2010 and 2012.
Slane earned the third medalist honor in her career and the second of her senior year, posting a two-shot victory over William & Mary's Alessandra Liu.
She entered the day tied for first place and quickly moved to one under after two pars and a birdie on three. Slane then posted three straight bogeys, but immediately responded with three consecutive birdies to finish the front nine at one under.
Slane then parred the next eight holes before capping her weekend with a birdie on 18 to secure the title.
“It was really windy out there today, so I was just trying to hit fairways and greens,” Slane said. “I was trying to stay around par, and after three straight bogeys, I gave myself a little pep talk and made three straight birdies. (Advancing to the NCAA Regionals) has been my dream since I arrived at Delaware, and I'm really happy that all my hard work is paying off.”
Fellow UD senior Nathalie Filler fired a 77 during her final round, finishing in third place with a 12 over par 78-73-77-228. Classmate Vimonthip Benjasupawan, who also carded a 77 on Sunday, tied for 21st place at 82-83-77-242, 26 over par.
Junior Grace Chua, who finished at 88-79-82-249, and classmate Vitoria Teixeira, who carded an 86-75-88-249, each tied for 29th place at 33 over par.
The Blue Hens, just the fifth school to win a CAA Women's Golf Championship, advance to the NCAA Regionals on May 5-7. Delaware will head to one of four regional sites: Stanford, Calif., Bryan, Texas, Baton Rouge, La., or Shoal Creek, Ala. The selection show will air on the Golf Channel on Monday, Apr. 25 at 6 p.m.
