NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team posted a 6-2 win in the opener before a 9-1 triumph in five innings during the nightcap as the Blue Hens swept a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader from Drexel Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Dragons (15-17, 0-5 CAA) scored in the top of the first inning during the opener on an RBI single by Paula Ueno, but Delaware (19-12, 3-2 CAA) immediately answered in the bottom half as Leanna
Gearhart (below) scored when Gabby Klecko reached on an error before Alyshia Dellatore worked a bases loaded walk.
The Dragons scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth to pull even, but the Blue Hens countered with three runs on just one hit during the bottom half to regain the lead for good.
Klecko led off with a single, and after two walks loaded the bases, she stole home on the throw back to the pitcher. Walks to Dellatore and Shelby Jones forced home another run, before Anna Steinmetz crossed the plate on a Lisa Stacevicz sacrifice fly.
Klecko then led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Mariah Kondravy to close the scoring.
Kiersten Coffman scattered 10 hits while allowing just two runs, one earned, in a complete game effort to improve to 12-4 on the year. Klecko finished with a pair of hits and scored three runs to lead the UD offensive attack.
Delaware then immediately took control of the nightcap by exploding for seven runs during the bottom of the first inning.
Kondravy singled home Gearhart with the first run of the frame, while Steinmetz followed with a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 game. Danielle Wissinger drove home a pair with a bases loaded single later in the frame, and after a run-scoring sacrifice fly by Hannah George, Gearhart tripled home Wissinger to cap the rally.
Kondravy opened the bottom of the second with a double and eventually scored on a Dellatore sacrifice fly, while Drexel got on the board in the third on an RBI single by Baeley Reed.
The score remained 8-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when Dellatore reached on an error and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by George to end the game due to the mercy rule.
Carolyn Szymanski (above) allowed just one unearned run on two hits as she moved to 7-7 on the year, while she added two hits at the plate along with Gearhart and Kondravy.
The final game of the series will take place on Sunday, with the game time getting pushed back to a 2 p.m. start.
