NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware's biggest win of the men's lacrosse season could not have come at a better time Saturday afternoon as the Hens scored the first four goals of the final quarter to break a tie and moved on to a 9-7 win over No. 19 ranked Massachusetts in the Colonial Athletic Association opener at Delaware Stadium.
Blue Hen sophomore Dean DiSimone netted his second consecutive hat trick as he scored two of his three goals during the pivotal fourth quarter barrage that pushed the Delaware lead to 9-5 with 2:16 left to play.
UMass (4-5, 0-1 CAA), which had a two-game win streak snapped, scored twice in the final two
minutes but the Blue Hens (4-7, 1-0 CAA) held on down the stretch and snapped a two-game losing streak of their own.
DiSimone, who netted his first career hat trick in last week's 15-11 setback at Rutgers, matched that total again as he scored three times and added an assist as part of a four-point day.
Senior Connor Frisina (above left) added two goals while senior Anthony Disanzo chipped in with a goal and an assist. Defensively, goalkeeper Parker Ferrigan (below right) came up big with 10
saves, none bigger than a stop off a shot by Gianni Bianchin from close range with 39 seconds left and UD clinging to the two-goal lead.
Tyler Bogart led the Minutemen with two goals while Brendan Hegarty, Bianchin, and Isaac Paparo each had a goal and an assist and goalkeeper Sean Sconone recorded 13 saves.
Delaware held UMass leading scorer Buddy Carr to just a single goal on one shot.
UMass scored just 21 seconds into the game but Delaware regrouped and used three straight goals, the final one by Frisina with 2:22 left in the half, to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. The Minutemen scored the only goal of the third period when Hegarty finished with 10:25 left to knot the score at 5-5.
But Delaware answered with a flurry to open the final stanza as they scored four straight goals to break the tie. Frisina put the Hens up for good with 9:38 left, DiSimone tallied with 7:47 left, Steve
DeLargy upped the lead to three goals with 4:31 left, and DiSimone finished off the run at the 2:16 mark to push the lead to 9-5.
