HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- A slow start doomed the Blue Hens Saturday afternoon in their Colonial Athletic Association battle at Hofstra as the University of Delaware fell behind 8-1 in the first half and could never catch up as part of a 13-7 setback at Shuart Stadium.
Delaware (4-8, 1-1 CAA), coming off a 9-7 win over Massachusetts in their league opener a week ago, could not keep that momentum going as the Blue Hens fell behind quickly, pulled to within five
goals early in the final stanza, but could never get closer. The Hens fell to Hofstra for the sixth straight time since a win in the 2011 CAA semifinals.
Blue Hen redshirt freshman Andrew Romagnoli led the Hens with two goals and an assist while sophomore Dean DiSimone (at left), the reigning CAA Player of the Week, added two goals, Steve DeLargy contributed a goal and an assist, and Connor Frisina tallied one goal. Goalkeeper Parker Ferrigan (below right) also contributed 11 saves.
Hofstra (7-4, 1-1 CAA), which lost to Fairfield in overtime in its CAA opener last Saturday, won for the third time in the last four games as the Pride had six different players score two goals.
Hofstra outshot the Hens 44-24, held a 33-26 advantage on groundballs, forced 14 Blue Hen turnovers, and held a 14-10 advantage on faceoffs.
Delaware committed a season-high tying seven penalties and the Pride took advantage with four extra man goals on the rainy and cool day.
The Pride jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the second quarter as Hendrickson scored twice and Trevor Kupecky was in on three of the goals. Delaware finally got on the board on a goal by Frisina six minutes into the stanza, but Hofstra answered with four straight goals before a late score by Romagnoli narrowed the gap to 8-2 at the break.
Delaware outscored Hofstra 4-1 over a 14-minute span in the second half and cut the margin to 11-6 after DiSimone scored two straight goals, the second with 10:02 left to play. A Romagnoli goal with 4:49 left kept the Hofstra lead at five but Delaware could never get closer.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• The Hens were looking to start the season 2-0 in league play for the first time since a 4-0 start during the 2011 NCAA Tournament season
