Blue Hens, Purcell Tied For Fifth After First Day of CAA Men's Golf Championship

SOUTHPORT, N.C. -- The University of Delaware carded a 307 score to finish Friday's action in a tie for fifth place following the first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship.
College of Charleston leads the nine-team field with a 296 opening round score, followed by James Madison at 304 and Drexel at 305. UNCW sits in fourth place at 306, while the Blue Hens and Elon are tied for fifth place with 307 totals.
Blue Hen sophomore Kieran Purcell carded a two over par 74 during his round on the par 72, 6,784-yard Founders Club course at St. James Plantation, ending the day tied for fifth place in the individual standings. Purcell quickly moved to three under par following birdies on 1, 4 and 6, and remained at three under through the front nine. However he posted three bogeys and a double bogey during a five over back nine.
Marc Oliveri recorded birdies on 6, 11 and 17 during his four over par 76 to end the day tied for 10th place, while Kyle Martin posted birdies on 1, 14 and 17 as he finished the round tied for 19th place with a six over par 78.
Blaine Lafferty and Mark Benevento each made one birdie on Friday as both players carded a seven over par 79 to finish the day tied for 24th place.
William Rainey of Charleston leads the field with a one under par 71, while Christopher Crawford of Drexel and Alex Henderson of James Madison are each one shot back.
The second round of the three-day tournament will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
