The Colonial Athletic Association race heats up Saturday as the Blue Hens, coming off a huge 10-7 upset win over then No. 7 ranked Towson last week, look to lock up one of four spots in the upcoming CAA Tournament as they battle longtime foe Drexel for Senior Day at Delaware Stadium.
Delaware jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening minutes and never looked back in posting the win at Towson last Saturday. Paul Major scored four goals to lead the way.
The Hens, who received votes in this week's Cascade/Maverik Inside Lacrosse Top 20 poll for the first time this season, can lock up an CAA Tournament berth with a victory today over Drexel.
How close is the CAA race? If Delaware, Towson (vs. Fairfield), and Hofstra (vs. UMass) all win today, there will be a four-way tie for first place at 3-1 with one game left to play. The regular season champion will host the CAA Tournament (May 5-7).
LAST TIME OUT
TOWSON, Md. (Apr. 16, 2016) -- The slow starts that have hampered the University of Delaware men's lacrosse team this season were nothing but a distant memory Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hens pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the men's college lacrosse season as Delaware jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and never trailed in knocking off No. 7 ranked Towson 10-7 at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Delaware (5-8, 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association) moved back into the thick of the CAA race as junior Paul Major scored four goals and Steve DeLargy added two as part of the upset victory. Andrew Romagnoli and Dean DiSimone each added a goal and an assist and goalkeeper Parker Ferrigan made 11 stops.
The Hens snapped a personal four-game losing streak to the Tigers (10-2, 2-1 CAA), who had a five-game win streak snapped and lost for the first time since a March 12 setback to Johns Hopkins.
• Paul Major has scored 11 goals in the last four games.
• DeLargy has scored a point in nine straight games. He went over the career 50-point mark vs. Towson
• Delaware leads the CAA in caused turnovers (7.38 pg)
• Senior shortstick middle John O'Connor ranks No. 6 all-time at Delaware in career caused turnovers with 38 (three shy of No. 5)
• Redshirt freshman Andrew Romagnoli, a first-year transfer from Marquette, netted six goals in a 14-6 win over VMI on Mar. 1. His six goals tied the UD single game freshman record of six set by Tom Ervin vs. Hofstra in 1986
• Delaware GK Parker Ferrigan scored a goal in the first half of the 12-11 overtime win over Binghamton on Mar. 12. He became the first UD goalkeeper to score since Jamie Blalock tallied a goal vs. Penn State in 1993
• Delaware is 31-50 all-time in CAA play (.383) and is looking for its first league championship since the 2011 season. The Hens also won CAA titles in 2005 (regular season), 2007 (tournament; NCAA Final Four); and 2010 (tournament).
