NEWARK, Del. -- Siena's Dan Swain led off the game with home run and things didn't get much better for the University of Delaware baseball team the rest of the way as the Blue Hens dropped a 9-2 decision in their series finale Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Siena scored two runs in four separate innings, finished with 10 hits, and took advantage of three Delaware errors and eight walks given up by UD pitchers on the way to the victory. The Saints (14-25) snapped a four-game losing streak.
Delaware (24-16), which had a three-game win streak snapped, had tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Hens could not generate any more offense the rest of the day in suffering the setback. The Hens still won the series thanks to a doubleheheader sweep on Saturday by wins of 11-4 and 6-2.
Jim ShermanDelaware freshman rightfielder Kyle Baker led the Hens with three hits to raise his team-leading average to .397, third baseman Diaz Nardo went 2 for 4, and catcher Nick Tierno went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Siena starter Chris Amorosi (2-4) picked up the win as he settled down after the first inning. He scattered eight hits over 5.1 innings before giving way to Bryan Goossens.
Delaware freshman Kyle Hinton (2-2), making just his third career starter, took the loss in 4.2 innings of work. Blue Hen pitchers walked eight batters and threw 164 pitches on a long afternoon.
Swain, who finished with two hits and three RBI on the day, lofted Hinton's second pitch of the game over the left field wall for his fifth homer of the season to give Siena the quick 1-0 lead. Fred Smart later stole home after a botched pickoff attempt at first to push the lead to 2-0.
Delaware came right back with two runs of its own in the bottom half. Baker singled with one out, stole second, and came home on an RBI single by Tierno. Tierno later scored on a throwing error by Amorosi to knot the score at 2-0.
But that would be it for the Hens as Siena broke the 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth. Hinton walked the bases loaded before striking out the next two batters. However, he couldn't escapte the inning as an error by Hen second baseman Jeremy Ake allowed Patrick Ortland to score and Brian Kelly brought home another run with a bases loaded walk.
Siena then tacked on another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Bishop and two more each in the seventh and ninth innings.
