Jim Sherman. “We hit the ball well. You would think 12 runs would be enough to get the win, but not today. We'll look to get out of this rut over the next week.”James Madison catcher Zach Tondi led the way for the Dukes as he went 3 for 6 with three runs scored, three RBI, and a home run.
Delaware made a valiant comeback attempt in the ninth after entering the final frame down 14-9. Patten delivered a bases-loaded single to score two runs and Nardo grounded into a double play to tack on another run to cut the margin two 14-12. The game ended when JMU lefthander Michael Evans struck out UD pinch-hitter Calvin Scott with a runner on first.
Burk FitzPatrick (0-3) started the afternoon on the mound for the Blue Hens and did not last long. The Dukes jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the second inning behind five hits and three walks. Down early, the Delaware bats were determined to chip away at the deficit.
The lead was cut to 5-3 in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a long two-run homer by Nardo, his fifth long ball of the season. Delaware then cut the deficit down to one run as Kyle Baker brought in center fielder Kevin Mohollen.
JMU would quickly regain a comfortable lead with three runs in the fifth, and two runs each in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Jeremy Ake, Nick Liggett, Kevin Mohollen, and Baker all had multi-hit afternoons for the Blue Hens.
• Kevin Milley was the Blue Hens most productive pitcher of the game, shutting down the JMU bats for 1.2 innings, giving up zero runs on only two hits, and striking out two.
• Delaware will continue action Tuesday with a trip to La Salle for a Liberty Bell Classic consolation game at 3 p.m.
• Delaware lost a CAA weekend home series for just the second time in the last nine tries dating back to 2013
• Delaware has now scored 10 or more runs in a game nine times and collected 10 or more hits 12 times this season
