NEWARK, Del. -- Delaware used another pair of impressive offensive performances to sweep a softball doubleheader from Delaware State, 8-7 and 9-3, Wednesday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens extended their winning streak to a season-long seven games while improving to 22-12 following the twinbill sweep. The Hornets, who entered the day having won six of their last seven contests, dropped to 14-16 on the year.
Gabby Klecko singled home Leanna Gearhart in the bottom of the first inning during the opener, before a three-run double by DSU's Sandy Hawthorne put the Hornets on top 4-1 in the top of the third. However Anna Steinmetz (left) singled home Klecko before Carolyn Szymanski (below) belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the half to put the Blue Hens back in front.
A bases loaded double by Vanessa Washington gave DSU a 7-5 advantage during the top of the fourth, but after Gearhart was hit by a pitch and Klecko singled during the bottom half, Steinmetz blasted a pitch over the centerfield fence to put Delaware on top, 8-7.
Szymanski then retired the Hornets in order during the final three innings to seal the victory, as she improved to 9-7 on the year. Klecko finished 3 for 4 during the victory, while Steinmetz added two hits and four RBI.
After DSU scored a run during the top of the first of the nightcap on a Rochelle Sablay RBI double, Gearhart scored on a Hornets error before Mariah Kondravy drove home Klecko with a groundout to give Delaware a 2-1 lead.
Gearhart scored on another DSU throwing error in the bottom of the third, before Shelby Jones delivered a two-run single to increase the margin to 5-1. The Hornets got two runs back in the top of the fifth, but an RBI single by Gearhart and a two-run double by Kondravy highlighted a four-run UD rally in the bottom half that put the game away.
Kiersten Coffman scattered 11 hits and allowed three runs in the complete game victory, improving her record to 13-4 on the year. Gearhart, Klecko and Kondravy each had two hits during the nightcap, while Delaware tied a school single game record by stealing nine bases.
The Blue Hens return to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with a three-game series at UNCW.
