TOWSON, Md. -- Towson first baseman Holiday Cahill hit three home runs while Nicole Stockinger added one of her own as the Tigers defeated the University of Delaware softball team, 9-3, Sunday afternoon.
Towson, which captured the weekend series after the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday, improved to 33-15 overall and is now tied for second place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings with Elon with a 9-8 league mark. Delaware opened the scoring during the top of the second inning when Anna Steinmetz blasted a leadoff home run over the centerfield fence, her 13th longball of the season. However the Tigers quickly pulled even in the bottom half as Daria Edwards led of with a walk and eventually scored on a bases loaded infield single by Kendyl Scott.
Cahill delivered a three-run shot the following frame to put Towson in front for good, while she and Stockinger went back to back in the bottom of the fifth to increase the margin to 6-1.
Delaware attempted to get back in the game during the top of the sixth, as after Steinmetz and Shelby Jones each walked, Carolyn Szymanski drove both runners home with a double to leftfield. But Cahill added another three-run homer in the bottom half to put the game away.
Towson pitcher Ambar Hickman improved to 13-5 in the complete game effort, while Szymanski fell to 11-10 after allowing four runs in 2.2 innings of work.
