Jim Sherman. “He had all his pitches working and he was just completely in control the whole game. Tierno had a good game with four hits and Patten keeps coming up with clutch RBIs. We are still alive and have a chance to make the playoffs going into the last weekend.”College of Charleston and James Madison both picked up league wins Sunday and are tied for fifth in the league standings at 10-11. Delaware and Towson are tied for seventh place but are just one game back at 9-12 in CAA play.
The top six teams advance to the league tournament, to be held May 25-28 at College of Charleston. Delaware will host league-leading UNCW for three games next weekend while Charleston hosts William & Mary, Towson travels to Northeastern, and JMU travels to Hofstra.
On Sunday, Towson (19-32, 9-12 CAA) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Richie Palacios led off with a single and later scored following a single by Brady Policelli.
Neither team would score again until the pivotal fourth inning when the Hens put up four runs as Tierno led off with a double, moved to third on a single by Jordan Glover, and scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 1-1. Patten added a two-run double to left field to make it 3-1 and Trimble brought home another run on a infield single.
Delaware then tacked on singles runs in the seventh and ninth for the five-run victory. Kyle Baker scored on an error in the seventh while second baseman Jeremy Ake had the run-scoring single in the ninth to score Glover, who had walked and stole second for his team-high 21st stolen base of the season.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Palacios had two of Towson's three hits but his 25th error of the season was one of three by the Tigers on the day. Towson committed 11 errors in the three-game series while Delaware had just two
• Milley, who entered with a 6.34 ERA, was making his first start since May 3 when he pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits to earn the victory in an 11-2 win over Saint Joseph's
