Mike Keogh has announced that sophomore Kieran Purcell has earned the University of Delaware Charlie Horn Grinder Award for the 2015-16 season.
Purcell, a native of Jersey City, N.J. (St. Peter's Prep), was the only Blue Hen to appear in all 12 tournaments for Delaware during the year, ranking second on the team with a 75.45 average round. He posted three top-20 finishes on the campaign, and was the Blue Hens' top finisher by tying for 14th place at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on Apr. 22-24.
Purcell also tied for 19th place at the season-opening Navy Fall Classic on Sept. 13-14, and tied for 20th the following weekend at the Cornell Invitational. He has competed in all 23 tournaments during his first two years at UD, averaging 75.06 shots per round.
The Grinder Award is presented by former Blue Hens standout golfer and program contributor Charlie Horn. Charlie was a three-year letterwinner for head coach Scotty Duncan in 1971-75, and served as co-captain of the 1975 squad that placed second at the Eastern Championships.
Purcell is the 10th Blue Hen to earn the Grinder Award, which was established following the 2006-07 season.
