Seven Delaware Rowers Named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes

NEWARK, Del. -- Seven University of Delaware rowers have been named 2016 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athletes, it was announced by the organization last week.
Blue Hen junior Olivia Brady (triple language, international relations), junior Claire Brown (economics, finance), sophomore Laura Donohue (pre-vet, wildlife conservation), senior Megan Kirby (marketing, operations management), junior Hannah Scholes (environmental engineering), sophomore Emma Spillman (neuroscience), and junior Kaitlyn Thomesen (quantitative biology) represented UD on the scholar-athlete list.
Brady participated in all eight meets for the Blue Hens this season, competing with the Third Varsity Eights, Second Varsity Eights, Second Varsity Fours, and Varsity Fours. Brown, who rowed with the Varsity Eights during every invitational, was a CAA All-Rowing Team and CRCA All-Region 2 Second Team honoree this spring.
Donohue was a member of the UD Second Varsity Eights during all eight regattas, while Kirby competed with the Varsity Fours during five meets before finishing the year with the Third Varsity Eights.
Scholes rowed with the Varsity Eights during every invitational and Spillman competed in all but one regatta with the Varsity Eights, while Thomesen was a member of the Second Varsity Eights for the first two meets before competing six times with the Varsity Eights.
Brady, Kirby and Scholes all earned the CRCA National Scholar-Athlete award for the second consecutive year. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be in their second, third our fourth year of eligibility, have rowed in a minimum of 75 percent of their institution's spring races, and have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for their career.
