Scott Grzenda. “We created a ton of opportunities, we just didn't finish them. I was really happy with the play of our backs today and as a group we just have to keep moving on and we'll be in good shape. We are always looking to work on finishing and we created a lot through the midfield today. We just have to sharpen it up.”Delaware's backs shut down Mills the entire day, allowing her just four shots on goal and keeping her out of the scoring column until the final minute of action. The 5-11 sophomore had scored both of the Hawks' goals entering the game and was the team's second leading scorer as a freshman in 2015 with 10 tallies.
Saint Joseph's outshot Delaware 18-11 but the Hens had an 8-4 advantage on corners and had most of the game's scoring opportunities but could only capitalize once.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the second half when Emily Gingrich dribbled around the defense and scored at the 58:56 mark.
Despite several scoring opportunities that went by the wayside, the Hens finally tallied at the 82:29 mark when Kabat turned and fired a shot from 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net to knot the score. The goal ended a scoreless streak of 308:47 minutes for the Hens that dated back to the season opener Aug.19 vs. Villanova.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Kabat's goal - her second of the season - was the first tally by the Blue Hen in the second half this season. Delaware has been outscored 8-1 after halftime this season
• Delaware has started out 0-4 for the first time since the 1992 season
• Rekos entered the game ranked No. 5 in the NCAA with 22 total saves and stopped seven shots vs. the Hawks
• Saint Joseph's has now defeated Delaware in three straight meetings and is unbeaten vs. the Hens in the last six contests (4-0-2)
• Delaware will return to action Sept. 2 when the Hens host Princeton at 7 p.m. at Grant Stadium. Princeton advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year but Delaware defeated the Tigers 1-0 during the regular season
