NEWARK, Del. – The shots just weren't falling in favor of the Blue Hens Tuesday evening at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium as No. 19 Virginia Tech shutout Delaware, 2-0.
Despite outshooting the Hokies, 15-10, the Hens (6-2) were unable to find the back of the net for the first time since last season's CAA Championship final in which Delaware fell to Hofstra, 2-0.
Collin Verfurth gave Virginia Tech (7-1) the 1-0 lead in the 49th minute before Ryan Marcano put it out of reach at 2-0 with less than two minutes remaining on the game clock.
Senior Dani Laguna (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jorge Manrique) led all players with five shots, including one on goal, while classmate Jaime Martinez (Madrid, Spain/American School of Madrid) and junior Carlos Perales (L'Alcúdia de Crespins, Spain/Colegio Claret Xàtiva) posted three apiece.
Redshirt sophomore goalie Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) tied a season-high with five saves.
Ben Lundgaard was credited with the win with four saves in the shutout.
“Tonight was a good college matchup between two teams receiving national attention. There was a lot going on for both sides and it was going to come down to whoever scored first. Congrats to a very good Virginia Tech team.”
