Scott Grzenda following the game. “We've played very well the last couple of games and we continue to get better. More than anything, the girls really deserved this victory tonight.”Delaware got the only goal it would need with 15:11 left in the opening half when Adams took a pass from Natalie Zelenky on the right side of the field and lofted a shot from 25 yards out over the outstretched arms of Loyola goalkeeper Lily Andres and into the top left corner of the net.
“It felt great,” said Adams about the win and scoring the decisive goal. “I love winning and I also love scoring, so that was a great moment. “Natalie just hit it out to me and I looked up and saw that it was open so I just took the shot.”
Despite pressure on both ends the rest of the way, the Delaware defense stood tough the rest of the night and delivered the victory as junior goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos (at left) registered six saves and
posted her eighth career shutout. Among the key saves was a diving stop of a free kick by Loyola's Nicole Wahlig 13 minutes into the second half. The Hens, who defeated Loyola for the third straight time, held big advantages in both shots (14-7) and corner kicks (14-4) and outshot the Greyhounds (3-2-1) by an 8-0 margin in the opening half.
The Hens had suffered heartbreaking setbacks in each of their last two outings. They fell to Saint Joseph's 2-1 last Sunday when the Hawks scored with just 29 seconds left in the first overtime period.
On Friday night, the Hens allowed defending Ivy League champion Princeton to tie the score with just five seconds left in regulation and the Tigers netted the game-winner early in the second overtime session.
