HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware men's golf squad easily captured the Colgate Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational team title while senior co-captain Marc Oliveri earned medalist honors as the Blue Hens opened their 2016 fall campaign in impressive fashion this weekend.
Delaware, which fired team rounds of 285 and 294 on Saturday, concluded the tournament with a 301 score on Sunday to win the title by 13 shots with a three-round total of 880. Cornell placed second in the 13-team field with an 893 score, followed by Army West Point at 901 and St. John's at 902.
Oliveri carded an even par 72 on the 6,834-yard Seven Oaks Golf Course on Sunday, posting a one-shot victory with a two under par total of 70-72-72-214. He becomes the first Blue Hen medalist since Jack Gianniny won the Binghamton Fall Invitational on Oct. 4-5, 2015, which was also the last time UD claimed a team victory.
Oliveri opened his final round with a bogey on the second hole, but followed with five pars before a birdie on eight. He then posted eight consecutive pars, before birdies on 17 and 18 gave him a three-shot lead. He finished one shot ahead of Fairleigh Dickinson's Nicolas Osorio, who carded a one under par 215 for the tournament, to claim his first collegiate victory.
Gianniny fired a 78 during Sunday's round to tie for fifth place with a four over par 68-74-78-220, while fellow junior Blaine Lafferty carded a 76 in his final round to tie for 15th place at 73-75-76-224, eight over par.
Sophomore Mark Benevento, playing as an individual, recorded a one over par 73 on Sunday and ended up tied for 18th place with a nine over par 75-77-73-225, while junior Kieran Purcell tied for 20th place with his 10 over par score of 74-77-75-226. Sophomore Bobby Diforio carded a 13 over par 75-73-81-229 to finish in a tie for 26th place at the invitational.
“To win right out of the gate shows how much work our men put in on their games this summer,” said Blue Hen head coach Mike Keogh. “To win as a team and have the individual tournament winner puts a cherry on top.”
The Blue Hens are back in action on Sept. 18-19 when they compete at the Navy Fall Classic in Annapolis, Md.
