TOWSON, Md. – A 16-point lead quickly dwindled in the fourth quarter, but Delaware was able to hold on for the 73-67 victory over the Tigers at Towson's SECU Arena Sunday afternoon.
The win marks the fifth straight for UD as the Blue Hens improve to 12-8 on the year and 6-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
TU outscored the Hens, 28-19, in the fourth quarter, but Delaware received huge free throws from juniors Kiersten West (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and Sadé Chatman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul) in the final seven seconds to seal the win.
Free throws were a crucial statistic for UD as the Blue Hens went 34-of-40 from the charity stripe.
West finished the game with a career-high 16 points, including six free throws and two 3-pointers, in just 13 minutes of action.
Junior Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y/North Babylon) and sophomore Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) added 14 points and nine rebounds apiece in the victory.
Raven Bankston registered a game-high 31 points for the Tigers (11-9, 4-5 CAA) while Mary Cuevas posted eight points and a game-best 11 rebounds.
“Any win on the road is huge in this league. We lost our composure in the fourth quarter and abandoned our game plan. In the end, we did what we needed to do."
Junior Makeda Nicholas
“We definitely felt a lot of pressure from Towson. They really played hard-nosed defense and we had to grind the entire game. Hopefully we can carry this momentum and energy into our upcoming games.”
Junior Kiersten West
“We had to stay aggressive, get to the basket and stay in help defense. I was confident in my shot today and was able to get comfortable on the court.”
