NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware saluted its four seniors Saturday night and freshman sensation Ryan Daly put in another outstanding effort, but the hot shooting of William & Mary duo Daniel Dixon and Omar Prewitt was too much to overcome and the Blue Hens dropped an 85-64 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball decision to the Tribe at the Bob Carpenter Center.
A season-high crowd of 3,619, the largest crowd to watch the Blue Hens play at home since the 2013-14 season, helped the Hens say goodbye to seniors Cazmon Hayes, Barnett Harris, Curtis McRoy, and Devonne Pinkard in the final home game of the season.
Delaware, which had a three-game win streak snapped, will close out the regular season with road games at the College of Charleston and Elon next weekend before heading back to Charleston, S.C. for the CAA Tournament March 3-6.
“William & Mary is really good,” said Delaware head coach Martin Ingelsby. “They have an older, experienced team that is really hard for us to guard. We got off to a good start, but they starting hitting some shots and we could never recover. They capitalized on our mistakes tonight, and we just couldn't get enough stops. I thought the crowd was excellent and the student turnout was fantastic, showing the excitement for where we are as a program."
Daly knocked down four three-pointers and finished with 20 points and seven rebounds while Hayes contributed 11 points and Pinkard added 10 points to lead the Blue Hens (12-17, 5-11 CAA).
Despite the loss, the Hens finished the season with a 9-5 mark at the BCC this season, the most wins at home since the 2013-14 NCAA Tournament season.
William & Mary (15-12, 9-7 CAA), which snapped a six-game road losing streak, got 25 points and eight rebounds from Daniel Dixon and 23 points, seven rebounds, and six assists from Omar Prewitt.
Dixon reached double figures for the 20th straight game and scored more than 20 points for the eighth time. The Tribe knocked down 10 of 22 three-point attempts - 7 of 13 in the opening half - and dished out 23 assists.
Hayes knocked down two free throws and Jacob Cushing went baseline for a thunderous dunk to give Delaware a 23-20 lead with 6:24 left in the first half, but the Tribe reeled off 10 straight points to regain the lead and went into halftime up 38-26. The Tribe maintained a double-figure lead the entire second half on the way to the victory.
