NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. -- University of Delaware freshman guard Ryan Daly was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year and was selected Third Team All-CAA as the league announced its all-conference teams Thursday night.
Daly (Ardmore, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) has appeared in all but one game while making 19 starts this season, leading the Blue Hens with 15.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while hitting a team-best 55 three-pointers. He ranks fifth in the CAA in rebounding and eighth in scoring, both the highest averages by league freshmen, and was named the CAA Rookie of the Week six times on the year.
The leading freshman scorer and rebounder in school history, he has reached double figures in 21 of the last 23 games, including nine straight. His nine 20-point games are the most by a freshman in UD history, and he has led the Blue Hens in scoring during 16 of the last 20 contests.
Daly becomes the fourth player in Blue Hen history to earn conference Rookie of the Year honors, along with Anthony Wright (East Coast Conference in 1989-90), Brian Pearl (North Atlantic Conference in 1991-92) and Devon Saddler (CAA in 2010-11). Additionally, he is the first player in Delaware history to earn all-conference accolades during his freshman season.
Blue Hen sophomore guard Curtis Lochner (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington), a Dean's List student as a health behavior science major, represented Delaware on the CAA All-Academic Team.
T.J. Williams of Northeastern was selected the CAA Player of the Year, while Devontae Cacok of UNCW was tabbed the CAA Defensive Player of the Year and Earl Grant of Charleston was honored with the CAA Coach of the Year Award. Evan Bailey of Charleston earned the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award.
Delaware finished the regular season with a 12-19 record, and the Blue Hens will be the ninth seed in the CAA Tournament with a 5-13 league mark. UD will take on eighth-seeded Hofstra in the tournament's first round on Friday at 6 p.m. at the North Charleston (S.C.) Coliseum.
