NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team opened its home season in style on Tuesday afternoon by posting a pair of dramatic walkoff wins, 5-4 and 6-4, over Villanova at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who improved to 8-12 on the year, extended their winning streak to six games
heading into this weekend's Colonial Athletic Association opening series against Towson.
Villanova, which dropped to 9-8 on the season, scored a run in the top of the first during the opener before adding three more runs in the fifth.
However Mattie Nuccio (below) singled home Alyshia Dellatore to put Delaware on the board during the bottom half, and after another run scored on a Wildcats error, Giovanna Kolofer delivered a two-run single to knot the contest at 4-4.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh when Nuccio led off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Leanna Gearhart, and scored on Kolofer's game-winning double to centerfield.
Jordan Cargile picked up her fifth win of the year after firing two scoreless innings of relief while Gearhart, Kolofer, Dellatore and Nuccio each had two hits in the victory.
Villanova again jumped in front during the nightcap when Lauren Herschberg led off the game with a home run, but Delaware rallied back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.
Kolofer singled home Gearhart with the first run of the frame, while Mariah Kondravy (above left) doubled home
Kolofer to put the Blue Hens on top. Anna Steinmetz then laced a triple to rightfield to chase home pinch runner Morgan Schroll, before she scored on an RBI single by Devon Steiner.
The Wildcats immediately responded in the top of the sixth when Brittany Husk smoked a bases clearing double off the fence to make it a 4-4 game, but in the bottom of the seventh Kolofer doubled with one out before Kondravy crushed a pitch over the wall in centerfield to set off the Blue Hen celebration.
Cargile went the distance in the circle to earn her second victory of the day, while Kolofer finished with three hits and Kondravy knocked home three.
Game Notes:
• Delaware's six-game winning streak is the longest since a seven-game streak from Mar. 26-Apr. 6, 2016
