Delaware Drops 12-3 Decision To Towson in CAA Opener

The day got off to a promising start for the Blue Hens (8-13, 0-1 CAA) as Giovanna Kolofer singled in the bottom of the first inning and one batter later Anna Steinmetz belted a two-run homer to rightcenter.
However the Tigers (10-13, 1-0 CAA) quickly responded with five runs in the top of the second to take control. Caroline Reid delivered a bases loaded double to drive home three runs, while Madison Wilson contributed a two-run double later in the frame.
Towson added two more runs in the top of the third on RBI singles by Nicole Stockinger and Dylan Jarvis, before UD shortstop Leanna Gearhart drilled a solo homer over the scoreboard in rightfield during the bottom half to make it a 7-3 game.
The score remained that way until the top of the seventh, when the Tigers tacked on five insurance runs on just three hits.
Megan Dejter improved to 4-7 for Towson after allowing three runs on six hits in a complete game effort, while Blue Hen starter Taylor Curran dropped to 1-1 as she gave up seven runs, four earned, on six hits in six innings of work.
Steinmetz finished 2 for 3 for Delaware while Gearhart, Kolofer, Mariah Kondravy and Ali Davis added a hit apiece.
The teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday with a 12 noon doubleheader.
Game Notes:
• Steinmetz posted her CAA-leading sixth homer of the year and tied Kondravy for second all-time at UD with 21 longballs
• Steinmetz recorded her team-best ninth multi-hit game of the campaign
• Gearhart's homer was her first of the season and the seventh of her career
• Kolofer extended her hitting streak to nine games
• Delaware had its six-game winning streak snapped
