NEWARK, Del. -- Mariah Kondravy delivered a walkoff single in the opener while Jordan Cargile fired a two-hit shutout in the nightcap as the University of Delaware softball team swept a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader from Towson, 5-4 and 4-0, Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who bounced back to take the weekend series after dropping the series opener to Towson, 12-3, on Friday, improved to 10-13 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Tigers dropped
to 10-15 overall and 1-2 in league play following the pair of losses.
Towson jumped in front during the opener when Kendyl Scott and Madison Wilson delivered RBI singles in the top of the second inning, but Anna Steinmetz scored on a throwing error in the bottom half and Giovanna Kolofer singled home Mattie Nuccio the following frame to knot the contest at 2-2. Leanna Gearhart then doubled off the rightfield fence in the fourth inning, driving home Emily Neal and Nuccio to put Delaware on top, 4-2.
The Tigers got a run back in the sixth on consecutive doubles by Brook Miko and Nicole Stockinger, before Shelby Stracher drove home the tying run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
But in the bottom of the eighth Nuccio legged out a one-out infield single, moved to second on a single by Gearhart, and scored the game-winning run when Kondravy laced a two-out single up the middle.
Cargile picked up her seventh win of the year after allowing four runs, three earned, in a complete game effort, while Nuccio finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored.
Delaware wasted little time in taking control of the nightcap, as an RBI single by Kondravy and a
bases loaded walk to Neal in the opening frame gave the Blue Hens an early two-run cushion.
Kondravy then doubled home Kolofer in the second inning, before she came around to score on a single by Steinmetz to put Delaware up four.
Cargile would do the rest, allowing just an infield single in the first inning an a double in the fifth while posting her first career shutout and improving to 8-7 on the season.
Kondravy went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI at the plate for the Blue Hens, while Gearhart added two hits and became UD's career stolen base leader by swiping second base in the bottom of the sixth.
Game Notes:
• Delaware won the series from Towson for the first time since 2013
• Gearhart now has 67 career stolen bases, eclipsing the previous record of 66 set by Kim Griffin from 1989-92
• Nuccio posted the first three-hit game of her career in the opener
• The second game shutout was Delaware's first since a 10-0 win at UNCW on Apr. 9, 2016
• Steinmetz extended her hitting streak to nine games
• The Blue Hens return to action next weekend for a three-game series at Drexel
