MALVERN, Pa. -- The University of Delaware men's golf team fired an even par 284 score on Monday as the Blue Hens ended the first day of the Villanova Wildcat Invitational in first place out of 19 squads.
Delaware tied for its second lowest round of the season, and will enter Tuesday's final round holding a one-shot lead over second place Villanova. Lehigh is in third place just two shots behind the Blue Hens at 286, Cleveland State is fourth at 288, and Fordham and Drexel are tied for fifth with 289 scores.
Blue Hen senior Marc Oliveri and junior Kieran Purcell each carded two under par 69 rounds on Monday on the par 71, 7,055-yard White Manor Country Club course, ending the day tied for third place in the individual standings. Patrick Luth of Cleveland State and Thomas Fricke of Navy are tied for the lead at three under par, while Ryan Kelly of Lehigh is the third player at two under par.
Bobby Diforio, playing as an individual, is tied for sixth place with a one under par 70, while Jack Gianniny shot a one over par 72 to end the round tied for 12th place. Blaine Lafferty is tied for 39th place with a three over par 74, while Mark Benevento fired a six over par 77 to finish the day in a tie for 68th place. Jack Melville, also playing as an individual, carded a seven over par 78 during his first career round as a Blue Hen and sits in a tie for 77th place.
