The University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad will be looking to continue its winning ways Saturday when the Blue Hens travel north to take on Massachusetts in both team's Colonial Athletic Association openers at 1 p.m.
The Blue Hens, who received votes in both the Inside Lacrosse/Maverik and USILA national Top 20 polls this week, take a 7-3 record into the contest. Delaware, winners in six of the last seven games, is coming off a historic victory last Saturday as the Blue Hens knocked off undefeated and then No. 1 ranked (IL/Maverik) Rutgers 13-9 at Delaware Stadium.
Delaware had never downed a top-ranked team in seven tries in school history. The Hens had defeated then No. 2 Virginia in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament but had never downed a top-ranked squad before.
Delaware got nine goals from its starting midfield unit at Will Hirschmann, Trupert Ortlieb, and Steve DeLargy each scored three goals and freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca recorded a career-high 19 saves. For their efforts, Hirschmann was named the CAA Player of the Week while DeLuca was named CAA Rookie of the Week and USILA/BSN Sports National Defender of the Week.
Massachusetts (3-5, 0-0 CAA) is coming off a 10-9 overtime setback to Brown last Saturday that snapped a three-game winning streak. The Minutemen opened the season with four straight losses to Army, Ohio State, Harvard, and Albany before defeating Yale, UMass Lowell, and Hartford in consecutive games.
