Blue Hens in Fifth Place, Gianniny Seventh After First Day of CAA Men’s Golf Championship

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- The University of Delaware men's golf team carded a 290 score during Friday's opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship to end the day in fifth place out of nine squads.
The College of Charleston leads the field with a 274 score, the lowest single round in league championship history, while Towson sits in second place at 281. UNCW is third with a 283 total, followed by Drexel at 287 and the Blue Hens. James Madison and Elon are tied for sixth place at 291, while William & Mary is eighth at 293 and Hofstra is ninth at 307.
Blue Hen junior Jack Gianniny fired a two under par 70 during his opening round on the par 72, 7,035-yard Monacan Front Nine and Buckingham Back Nine at Salisbury Country Club, ending the day tied for seventh place in the individual standings. Gianniny birded the first and fourth holes during a one under par front nine, before adding birdies on 11 and 13 while also finishing the back nine at one under.
Marc Oliveri shot a one under par 71 on Friday, including birdies on 4 and 17 while recording just one bogey, to end the day tied for 12th place. Kieran Purcell, who fired a two over par 74, finished the day tied for 25th place. Purcell posted birdies on 5 and 14 while adding 13 pars on the day.
Bobby Diforio and Mark Benevento each carded three over par 75 rounds on Friday, as both players ended the day tied for 30th place. Diforio birdied the first hole and added 14 consecutive pars during his round, while Benevento fired birdies on the 12th and 17th holes.
Parker Derby of Charleston and Spencer Alexander of Towson are tied for the individual lead after both players shot a six under par 66 during their opening round.
Due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday, the second and third rounds of the tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.
