Ope Sweeps Hurdles Events as Blue Hens Dominate Own Delaware Classic

Delaware took first place in 13 of the 21 events and totalled 347 points to win the team title, easily outdistancing runner-up Navy (155), Colgate (93), and St. Peter's (64) in the six-team field.
Colgate won the men's team title with 138 points, besting runner-up St. Peter's with 124 points in the six-team field. The meet also included high school competition and the St. George's Technical School earned the team titles in both events.
The Blue Hens were led by senior captain Leslie Ope, who was the day's lone double individual winner as she captured the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 14.69 and added a first place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a clocking of 1:05.95.
Also taking home first place finishes for Delaware were Isis Pinkney in the 100 meters (12.31); Michaela Meyer in the 400 meters (57.25); Ilana Schnaufer in the 1,500 meters (4:45.40); Mackenzie Jones in the 3,000 meters (10:14.32); Stephanie Bazan in the 3,000m steeplechase (11:31.94); the 4 x 100m relay team of London Freeland, Pinkney, Haley Berkeley, and Tyler Jackson (48.87); the 4 x 400m relay team of Freeland, Nadia Khoury, Bema Amponsah, and Carolyn Darr (3:55.92); Ashley Bailey in the pole vault (11-5.75); Anisa Fortt in the triple jump (37-3); Irene Cedano in the hammer (156-0); and Kristina Valko in the javelin (126-4).
Delaware also recorded eight second place finishes, including a runner-up finish by Fortt in the long jump (17-1.5).
Delaware will return to action at the end of this week when several members of the team take part in the historic Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
