ELON, N.C. -- University of Delaware junior righthander Jordan Cargile fired a five-hit shutout in the nightcap as the Blue Hen softball team split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader with Elon Saturday afternoon at the Hunt Softball Park.
The Phoenix (31-18, 8-8 CAA) took the opener, 6-4, before Delaware (20-25, 7-10 CAA) eked out a 1-0 victory during the second game of the day. Following the twinbill split, Elon remains one and a half games in front of the Blue Hens with four league contests remaining, in the race for the fifth and final CAA Tournament spot.
Cargile allowed just five hits and did not walk a batter while tossing her third shutout of the season, as she improved to 15-12 on the year. The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Miranda O'Donald led off with a single, stole second, and scored with two outs when Mariah Kondravy hit a groundball that was deflected on a dive by Elon second baseman Callie Horn and trickled into rightfield.
Cargile then retired the Phoenix in order during the final two frames to seal the victory.
Kondravy, Anna Steinmetz, Devon Steiner and O'Donald had the four Blue Hen hits off Elon pitcher Kiandra Mitchum, who took the loss despite allowing just the one run in a complete game effort.
The Phoenix struck first in the opener by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by Carey Million, before adding four more in the bottom of the third to take a 6-0 lead.
Delaware got on the board in the top of the fourth when Steinmetz doubled home Leanna Gearhart, while Kondravy followed with an RBI single to plate Morgan Schroll and make it a four-run contest.
The Blue Hens added two more runs in the top of the sixth on run-scoring singles by Mattie Nuccio and Ali Davis, and put the tying runners on base in the seventh when Steinmetz walked with one out and Kondravy followed with a double to leftcenter. However Mitchum then struck out Alyshia Dellatore before getting Nuccio to line out to second to end the game.
Mitchum won her 17th game for the Phoenix after allowing two runs in four innings of work, while Taylor Curran dropped to 4-7 for Delaware as she surrendered six runs (four earned) during six frames in the circle. Kondravy led the Blue Hen offensive attack by finishing 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
The teams will conclude their weekend series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at the Hunt Softball Park.
