Kieran Purcell Earns UD Men's Golf Charlie Horn Grinder Award For Second Straight Year

NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen men's golf junior Kieran Purcell has earned the University of Delaware Charlie Horn Grinder Award for the 2016-17 season.
Purcell, a native of Jersey City, N.J. (St. Peter's Prep), earns the Grinder Award for the second straight year. He appeared in all 11 tournaments for the Blue Hens this season, ranking third on the team with a 74.04 average round.
Purcell finished a team-best sixth at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational and Finegan Invitational, and also led Delaware by placing 12th at the Rhode Island Invitational. Additionally, he tied for 10th place at the Manor Intercollegiate and tied for 13th at the Wildcat Invitational.
Purcell has participated in all 34 tournaments during his first three years at Dealware, while is 74.75 career stroke average currently ranks fifth in UD history.
The Grinder Award is presented by former Blue Hens standout golfer and program contributor Charlie Horn. Charlie was a three-year letterwinner for head coach Scotty Duncan in 1971-75, and served as co-captain of the 1975 squad that placed second at the Eastern Championships.
Purcell is the second Blue Hen to earn multiple Grinder Awards, which was established following the 2006-07 season. Greg Matthias won the award in both 2010 and 2012.
