Blue Hen Men's Golfers Open Fall Season at Colgate's Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The University of Delaware men's golf team will open its 2017 fall season this weekend when the team travels north to the Seven Oaks Golf Club to compete in the Alex Lagowtiz Memorial Invitational hosted by Colgate University
The two-day tournament features two rounds on Saturday and one on Sunday at the par 72, 6,834-yard Seven Oaks Golf Club, with action beginning at 9 a.m. both days. The 15-team invitational includes the Blue Hens, Colgate, Binghamton, Bucknell, Cornell, Fairleigh Dickinson, La Salle, Lafayette, Lehigh, North Dakota State, Pennsylvania, Rider, Seton Hall, St. Bonaventure and St. Joseph's.
The Blue Hens are sending five players from their 10-player squad to the invitational including seniors Jack Gianniny and Kieran Purcell, who are returning for the second time, as well as Bobby Diforio, Jack Melville and RJ Wren. Gianniny, who was one of two players to appear in all 11 tournaments last season and ranked second on the team with a 73.46 stroke average, tied for fifth at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational last season to help lead the Blue Hens to the team title. Purcell, who also appeared in every tournament last season and ranked third on the team with a 74.04 average stroke round, tied for 20th place in the same invitational last year.
The Blue Hens will be looking to defend their team title after winning the invitational by 13 strokes a year ago. Delaware is looking to improve upon its sixth place finish at the 2017 CAA Championship as the Blue Hens return four letterwinners and add three newcomers to the squad.
The Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational is the first of five fall events for the Blue Hens, who return to action on September 16-17 at the Cornell Invitational. Delaware will also compete in the George Mason Patriot Invitational on September 25-26, the Elon Phoenix Invitational on October 16-17 and the ODU/Outer Banks Invitational on October 22-24.
